Gómez & Gómez Learning Model

Gómez y Gómez Learning Model

With the rapid increase of culturally and linguistically diverse students populating today's schools, changes in educational pedagogy, programs, and practices that effectively address those changing demographics is not only necessary but inevitable.

Thus, to meet the needs of our school’s population, Salida del Sol’s board of directors has adopted the Gómez and Gómez Dual-Language Immersion program.

Why Dual Language?

Dual-Language Education shows great promise for the academic and linguistic success of language minority children and for the development of biliteracy in all children. This approach emphasizes educational equality for both English and non-English-speaking children by validating both language learners and their culture. Our dual language model serves as vehicles for positively impacting education and societal change while eliminating the academic achievement gap that currently exists between English and Spanish-speaking children.

Balanced Model

To meet the goals of our mission and ensure every student develops a good foundation, the teachers at Salida del Sol offer equal amounts of instruction in both English and Spanish. Each classroom is comprised of half native-English speakers and half native-Spanish speakers. Students and teachers work systematically to become bilingual and biliterate in both languages. Communication during non-content times revolves around our “language of the day.” On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, we speak Spanish. All announcements and conversations in the hallways or playgrounds are in Spanish. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, we speak English. In every subject, teachers provide 15 to 20 minutes of small-group instruction, which allows them to work one-on-one with students who have not yet reached bilingual fluency. Students may also work cooperatively in bilingual pairs or groups to increase language development.

Meet Dr. Leo Gómez

Dr. Leo Gómez is a retired professor from the University of Texas–Pan American College of Education. His work in the field of bilingual and ESL education laid the foundation for the Gómez & Gómez Dual-Language Enrichment (DLE) model

For over 25 years, he (and his brother Richard Gómez) researched the linguistic and academic issues that affect language-minority populations, particularly those from native Spanish-speaking cultures. He published several articles describing the need for schools to implement enrichment models of bilingual education that would not only educate bilingual learners but all children. According to these articles, consistent implementation of a dual-language education model effectively improves the long-term academic and linguistic achievement (based on standardized tests in reading and math) of both Spanish and English-speaking students.

Today, the Gómez & Gómez Elementary DLE model has been successfully implemented in over 692 schools across the nation.
